The Ruta de los Volcanes (GR131) crosses some of the highest parts of La Palma and passes numerous volcanic craters. The original island circuit (GR130) stays on the western side of the island but the 2021 eruption closed the trail between Las Manchas and Los Llanos. It’s still possible to hike as far as Las Manchas and continue by bus, but we decided to turn the trail closure into an opportunity and combine the GR131 with the GR130 instead. It makes for a long day, but it’s doable with an early start.",[],{"type":67,"text":402,"spans":403,"direction":22},"The stage begins with a steady climb through beautiful pine forest. Although the ascent gains around 1200m, it never feels too demanding thanks to the gentle gradient and abundant shade. The first 5km are especially striking, with bright green pines contrasting against the black volcanic ground. Higher up, the terrain becomes more exposed and the trees smaller. Throughout the route, the scenery constantly shifts between open volcanic landscapes and dense woodland.",[],{"type":67,"text":405,"spans":406,"direction":22},"Volcán Deseada (1933m) is the highest point of the stage. From here, you get impressive views of Caldera de Taburiente in the north, and closer you can clearly see the Tajogaite crater formed during the 2021 eruption.
